“CARNIVAL DREAM”: THE LARGEST CRUISE SHIP BUILT IN ITALY BY FINCANTIERI
Today there was the delivery at Monfalcone shipyard of the “Carnival Dream”, Carnival Cruise Line’s new flagship, which, at 130,000 gross tonnes, is the largest cruise ship ever built in Italy.
Present at the ceremony were the acting Vice President of the Senate, Rosa Angela Mauro, the Minister for Institutional Reforms and Devolution, Umberto Bossi, and, representing Carnival Group, Micky Arison, Chairman and CEO, and for Carnival Cruise Line, Gerry Cahill, President and CEO, while Fincantieri was represented by the Chairman Corrado Antonini and the CEO Giuseppe Bono.
The “Carnival Dream” is an enterprise which will make its mark in the history of shipping: 130,000 gross tonnes and 306 metres long, her 2,558 cabins will accommodate approximately 6,000 people (4,633 guests and 1,367 crew). More than 5.5 million hours over a period of 3 years were spent to build her, involving around 5,000 people working full time. Incorporating high technological standards and maximum passenger comfort, the new vessel weds majestic dimensions with a modern, eye-catching design. Thanks to advanced engineering solutions the public areas of the “Carnival Dream”, unlike the ships which preceded her, are open to the outside meaning that for the first time passengers will be able to walk round the whole perimeter of the ship along a walkway on deck 5. Furthermore, the ship affords a wide range of entertainment satisfying the diverse tastes and demands of international customers, including a water park on the last deck with a four-slide instalment.
With the “Carnival Dream”, since 1990 Fincantieri, world leader in the sector, has built 50 cruise ships, 47 for different brands in Carnival Group; a further 12 vessels are scheduled to be built by 2012 in the group’s shipyards.
Every year shipping activities in Italy – in which Fincantieri is a reference operator – produce goods and services worth 36.5 billion euros, equivalent to 2.7% of GDP, with exports for this sector totalling 14 billion euros –5% of domestic exports – and provide over 395,000 jobs in direct employment and employment in related manufacturing and service industries in the supply chain.
